1952/53 – I Love Lucy was #1 on CBS Monday. Note: Any BOLD shows were cancelled in 1952 season; Hollywood Screen Test was cancelled in the sixth season. Alternate Shows: Philco TV Playhouse and Goodyear TV Playhouse were on NBC Sunday at 9 PM. The Buick Circus Hour appeared in Texaco Star Theatre's time period, NBC Tuesday at 8 PM, every fourth week. Alternate Title: Due to the sponsorship, Summer Theatre was also known as Interlude on alternate weeks. Biggest New Hit: The Buick Circus Hour was #6 on NBC Tuesday. Texaco Star Theatre was #5. Both series shared the same time period. For a hit show, The Buick Circus Hour was cancelled in the first season. Maybe, The Clown scare the viewers off. Maybe, Kim's singing voice deafen the viewers. Maybe, Bill Owens charge outrageous high prices to see the circus in town. Maybe, The Ringmaster threaten to throw the viewers in the cage with the lions. Who knows the real reason why it was cancelled? First Run: Hopalong Cassidy begun a one year syndication run; it was previously on NBC from 1949–1951. Local TV: The Strawhatters was on local TV in New York in 1952, then on DUM in May 1953. Valentino was on local TV in New York for a time. Name Change: ABC Album to Plymouth Playhouse starting with the third episode. Blind Date to Your Big Moment, then few weeks later, it went back to Blind Date. Campbell Playhouse to Campbell Soundstage as a LIVE series. The playhouse was filmed. Martin Kane, Private Eye to Martin Kane in August 1953. Original Run: The Doctor was on NBC Sunday at 10 PM. Fight Talk was on ABC Saturday at 9:45 PM. General Electric Theater was on CBS Sunday at 9 PM from 1953–1961. Pet Shop was on DUM Saturday at 7:30 PM for two seasons. Those Two was on NBC Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 7:30 PM for two seasons. Radio: Death Valley Days was on the radio from 1930–1945. Ethel And Albert was on ABC from 1944–1950. Peg Lynch was the creator and the star. The TV version lasted from 1953–1956 with Peg Lynch and Alan Bunce. Gangbusters was on the radio from 1936–1957. Life With Luigi was on CBS from 1948–1953. Meet Millie was on CBS from 1951–1954. The Walter Winchell Show was on the radio from 1932–1956. Reruns: DuMont aired Big Town reruns under the name of City Assignment while CBS showed original episodes of Big Town. The Return: DUM revived Blind Date for a summer run. NBC revived Candid Camera for the summer. NBC revived the former CBS series, Ford Theatre, after a year absence. NBC revived The Life Of Riley with a brand new cast in January 1953. This time around, it lasted for six seasons. Jackie Gleason was in the original failed 1949 series. Surprisingly, Jackie started his own series this season. What's It Worth returned to DuMont for another year. It was previously on CBS in 1948. DUM revived Meet Your Congress. It was previously on NBC in 1949. DUM revived New York Giants Quarterback Huddle after a year absence. ABC revived Other Lands, Other Places. It was last seen in 1951. CBS revived TV's Top Tunes. It was last seen in 1951. Sammy Kaye returned to NBC after a year absence. He was previously on CBS. Summer Replacement: The Larry Storch Show replaced The Jackie Gleason Show for the summer. Saturday Night Revue replaced Your Show Of Shows for the summer. Summer Theatre replaced The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet for the summer. Summertime U.S.A. replaced Jane Froman's U.S.A Canteen for the summer. Your Play Time replaced the two alternated series, The Jack Benny Show and Private Secretary, for the summer. Switch Networks: Blind Date went from NBC to DUM. The Continental went from CBS to ABC. Drew Pearson went from ABC to DUM in December 1952. The Eddy Arnold Show went from CBS to NBC. Hollywood Opening Night was a LIVE series on NBC; even it had a host, Jimmy Fidler. CBS had neither of them last season. In the first and last season, This Is The Life bounced back and forth from DUM to ABC to DUM to ABC. Rebound went from ABC to DUM. Youth On March went from ABC to DUM. What's Your Bid went from to ABC to DUM in May 1953. Tidbits: George S. Kaufman was suspended from This Is Show Business for a little while. He went on about commercialization of Christmas and then said, "Let's makes this one program on which no one sings 'Silent Nights.'" CBS got angry letters from the viewers. Doc Cockle lasted 3 episodes and quickly replaced by Mr. Peepers. After the network run, This Is The Life strived in syndication till the 1980's. The Fishers was phased out in 1956 and the series became an anthology series. What's The Story was the last surviving DuMont show in 1955. After DuMont finished off boxing in 1956, the network was a distant memory. Pick The Winner was on CBS and DUM at the same time for the 1952 Presidential year. Private Secretary wasn't on CBS in the summers of 1953 and 1954; NBC showed the reruns instead. Adventure was a big failure in prime time. The series found success on CBS Sunday afternoons from 1953–1956. Gangbusters was one of the few series to be cancel on Xmas day. Thank goodness I am not in their shoes! Who want a bittersweet Xmas? Hmm, The Big Idea! Hey, I got a great idea. Why don't we get the nasty American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, produce a series just like that? Oh, man! The name is coming to me. Let's call it American Inventor! Wow! What a name! With Simon, American Inventor won't fail, unlike The Big Idea. Sadly, some great ideas were stolen. Got that, Peter Jones? ABC's Plymouth Playhouse turned three pilots into full fledge series. Jamie was on ABC from 1953–1954. Colonel Humphrey Flack was on DUM from 1953–1954 and in syndication from 1958–1959. Justice was on NBC from 1954–1956. 1952/53 Fall Season One Season (1952/53) The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet – 1952–1966, ABC, comedy Cavalcade Of America – 1952–1957, NBC, dramatic anthology Ford Theatre – 1952–1956, NBC; 1956/57, ABC, dramatic anthology Four Star Playhouse – 1952–1956, CBS, dramatic anthology, David Niven I Married Joan – 1952–1955, NBC, comedy, Joan Davis, Jim Backus The Jackie Gleason Show – 1952–1955, CBS, comedy variety Jane Forman's U.S.A Canteen – 1952–1955, CBS, musical variety, LIVE, Jane Froman Meet Millie – 1952–1956, CBS, comedy, Elena Verdugo, Florence Halop Mr. & Mrs. North – 1952/53, CBS; 1954, NBC, comedy/mystery, Richard Denning Name That Tune – June 1953–1954, NBC; 1954–1959, CBS, game New York Giants Quarterback Huddle – 1952–1953, DUM, sports commentary, Steve Owen Our Miss Brooks – 1952–1956, CBS, comedy, Eve Arden, Gale Gordon The Red Buttons Show – 1952–1954, CBS; 1954/55, NBC, comedy/variety, Red Buttons This Is Your Life – 1952–1961, NBC, testimonial Two For The Money – 1952/53, NBC; 1953-1957, CBS, quiz, Herb Shriner The Walter Winchell Show – 1952–1955, ABC, news/commentary, Walter Winchell Cancelled Shows: Anywhere, U.S.A. – ABC, documentary drama, Eddie Dowling Balance Your Budget – CBS, quiz, Bert Parks The Buick Circus Hour – NBC, musical drama, LIVE, Joe E.
